Course Description: This course is designed to teach the fundamental skills and basic techniques of shooting color and black and white images with digital cameras. Special emphasis will be placed upon aesthetic and visual concerns as well as presentation and craftsmanship. The course focuses upon understanding and operation of the camera, manual exposure, composition, history of photography, and image correction through Adobe Photoshop. Advanced students who already have a strong foundation in basic digital photography will be introduced to advanced techniques of photo editing through Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom software. By the end of the course students will have developed an understanding of their own photographic language and have acquired a more critical eye.
This course introduces beginning and advanced students to the formal and technical issues of on-site painting. Students will learn to accurately and creatively render from life. The class will address the challenges and benefits posed from working on-site. Taking advantage of the city of Florence and its environs students will work primarily on location in museums, gardens and other historic locations of interest to the instructor and students. For practical reasons students will be encouraged to use only water based colors though more advanced students may choose to further develop work done on location in other medium outside of class time.
Serigraphy or Silk Screen is a printmaking technique that can be applied to fine art prints, graphic design and photographic experimentation. The course covers various stencil making techniques such as paper and cut stencils and direct block out. The main emphasis is on photographic emulsion techniques using hand drawn acetates, photocopies, computer printouts and photographs with litho film or diffusion transfer film. Instruction in darkroom procedures, ink mixing, registration and printing methods will be given.

The European Union (UE in Italian) is not an Intergovernmental Organization like the UN, nor a Federation of States like the USA. The EU is a Super-National Organism to whom the National States delegate some of their powers.
It is not easy to understand the EU and its complex administrative structure, but it is fundamental if one wants to understand the Continent and Italy in particular.
After WWII Europe was devastated by the biggest conflict ever seen and two big European countries were responsible for the disaster: Germany and Italy. WWII involved the whole planet, but it was mostly a war provoked by Europe and against Europe. That’s why in 1957 the Prime Ministers of West Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg met in Rome and signed the treaties that would give birth to the Economic European Community, the mother of the EU. Already in 1950 in Paris, the French Minister Robert Schuman, had held a speech in which he wished a Continent with no more wars, in peace, economically united and where all the citizens could travel freely.
Today we have realized part of that dream. Europe is a peaceful continent with no barriers, no customs and a common currency. Is that enough? Is this what the fathers of Europe wanted for future generations? And what is the role of Europe in our modern, globalized world?

The end of the 1950’s brought about new directions in artistic practices and beliefs. The role of the artist in society changed significantly with the advent of Pop art, Minimalism, Conceptual art, Performance art, and art, Installation art and many other artistic movements of the second half of the 20th century. Starting with a review of the formative artistic ideas, which led up to these new directions, this course will take a close look at the art of today. This inquiry is of absolute importance for artists wishing to understand the challenges faced in the 21st century. Students consider theory as a way to become an inspired and autonomously creative thinker and will do several writing assignments in conjunction with topical readings.
This course aims to give students a thorough knowledge of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Italy. They will examine the most significant examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Europe, as well as in different Italian regions, with a particular focus on Tuscany and the cities of Pisa, Lucca, Pistoia, Siena and Florence.
Romanesque and Gothic architecture will be seen in relation to developments of European society and to contemporary social, political, cultural and religious backgrounds. Visits to the most relevant monuments of the Romanesque and Gothic ages in Florence will constitute an integral part of the course.
Special attention will be given to the work of the architect and sculptor Arnolfo di Cambio as well as artists such as Cimabue, Nicola and Giovann
This course will guide the student in the history of Florence in order to make clear the birth of this worldwide beloved city and understand the history of Italy, its contradictions and divisions, but also its great art, literature and political development. The Students will be presented with an interdisciplinary overview of the history of Florence until the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of Modern Era. The most prominent characters of the Florentine history will be presented one by one, through visits on site.
Using Italian fashion as a model, this course is structured to familiarize students with the history of Italian fashion design. From textile design and accessories, to haute-couture and prêt-a-porter, students will explore the many aspects of the Italian fashion industry.
Visits to design studios, fashion exhibits and textile factories introduce students to the industry first hand.
The history of Italian fashion component of the course will begin pre-WWII, explore the High Fashion in Rome during the 50’s, the birth of the Italian Fashion Industry in Florence, and ready to wear in Milan. There is a special focus, through videos and visits, on the lives and careers of the most relevant Italian designers of the 20TH century in order to offer a general understanding of the foundation of Made in Italy.
This course is a survey of the global fashion industry emphasizing the role of both design and merchandising and all aspects of the development of apparel and accessories from fiber to finished product in a retail setting. Students will work on assignments and projects that will help them fully understand the depth and breadth of the fashion environment. Group critiques and class discussions will enrich student knowledge of the subject by comparing projects and opinions. The course is intended for students that want a thorough understanding of the global fashion industry and career opportunities within the various levels of the fashion environment.
This course focuses on the study and understanding of sustainable clothing and its influence in today’s fashion industry and modern life. Ethical fashion refers to the use of fabrics derived from eco-friendly resources, and the study of how these fabrics are made. Being “green” in fashion today means reducing the amount of clothing discarded to landfills and decreasing the environmental impact of agro-chemicals in producing conventional fiber. Special emphasis will be placed on the vintage phenomenon and on recycling as fundamental parts of this complex subject. The course will analyze the impact of the reduction of raw materials and virgin resources, as it relates to fitting in the context of a more powerful globalized fashion industry and how these two worlds often collide as well as how sustainability in the clothing industry can provide a new market for additional job opportunities.
This course is meant to help foundation and advanced students develop drawing abilities as they relate to interior architectural spaces. The class follows the decades old practice of teaching architects and designers how to sketch as a learning and study tool as well as a means to understand and read the architectural environment. In-studio instruction and demonstrations plus on-site exercises in some of the most relevant historical and contemporary buildings in Florence will provide students with the skills to understand the physical environment around them. Students will be helped to understand the value of sketching as one of the most remarkable experiences for the designer in order to establish a useful and creative conversation regarding the project at hand.
This is an entry level Italian language course designed for students who have never studied the language before. The goal of the course is to obtain a basic but solid understanding of the Italian language through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Upon completion of this course students should have the basic communications skills needed for day-to-day activities.
